5 Fun Holiday Activities for Seniors

The holiday season can be a hard time for seniors who miss loved ones who are gone or who no longer see some family members who have moved away or out-of-state. Therefore, it is especially important to plan activities and keep your elderly relative active and involved during the holiday season. The well-qualified staff at Hartford Home Care Assistance suggest the following ideas that your senior is sure to enjoy.

  1. “A Cup of Christmas Tea” Party
Invite two or three family members or friends by for a holiday tea party. If available, read aloud the short book, A Cup of Christmas Tea, which is a sweet story for the season. Serve a special holiday-blend tea and festive cookies or treats on the best china.
  2.  Holiday Craft Fair
Find a holiday craft fair at a local church, community center, or farmers’ market in Hartford, and make a special trip to see the holiday decorations. This would be a good opportunity for your loved one to pick up a pretty decoration or bauble to give as a gift. If your loved one enjoys making crafts, use the craft fair to find creative and unique gift or decoration ideas.
  3. Carol Sing-Along
Invite some family and friends over to sing Christmas carols. Have holiday refreshments like hot chocolate or mulled cider ready to serve along with holiday treats. Encourage your senior to share memories of their Christmases past and their own special traditions.
  4. Nursery Open House
For seniors who are mobile, a visit to a local nursery holiday open house will be a treat. The nursery will have beautiful floral arrangements, decorations, and gift ideas on display. Ask the nursery if a special demonstration could be arranged for seniors, such as making a Christmas arrangement or centerpiece.
  5. Shopping Excursion
Plan a short shopping trip to a local store or shopping center to buy gifts for family members and friends. Select a large store where they can find something for everyone, or an area with shops close together so walking is kept to a minimum. End the trip with a stop by a restaurant for a meal or a dessert.
